More than 38,000 electricity consumers across Southland and West Otago will receive money off their power bills this spring, with The Power Company Ltd (TPCL) providing $11.7 million in price discounts.
Eligible consumers receive a discount based on how much electricity they used during the year. As an example, a household which used 12,000kWh will receive a discount of $276.
The company has shared its success with consumers connected to its network since 2001.
Former TPCL Chair Peter Moynihan said the annual price discount was a significant benefit of the company’s local ownership and an important contribution to households and businesses throughout the southern region.
“The Power Company is ultimately owned by the consumers connected to our network, so we’re pleased to be able to return this benefit directly through their power bills,” Mr Moynihan said.
“We also know that power use is typically higher through the colder months, so having the discount applied in September and October is particularly timely.”
TPCL has returned $177.4 million to Southland and West Otago consumers through its discount programme.
To qualify for the 2026 price discount, consumers needed to be connected to the TPCL network on 31 August with a supply of 8kVA or greater. Residential consumers will receive a discount based on their electricity usage, receiving 2.3 cents per kilowatt-hour of electricity they have consumed. General consumers will receive a discount based on a combination of fixed charges and electricity consumption.
The discount will be credited through electricity retailers and appears as a discount on consumers’ September or October electricity bills.
